Melanie Dubel developed a passion for dance at a young age that was kindled and inspired by her ballet teacher Marilyn Cloutier, a former student of America’s greats, George Balanchine, Mikhail Fokin, Ted Shawn and Luigi. Thanks to Marilyn’s inspiration and constant support, Melanie pursued and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from UNC-Greensboro in 1995. Beyond her formative training she participated in the American Dance Festival six week intensive, where she performed in Dianne McIntyre’s reconstruction of Helen Tamiris’ 1937 work “How Long Brethren?” She later studied Flamenco in Madrid, Spain under Felisa De la Cruz. In addition to dance, Melanie also trained in Pilates and holds a reformer teaching certificate with im=X Pilates.
Melanie's 30 years spent teaching dance includes studios, community arts programs and at Lees-McRae College Theater Arts department as adjunct dance faculty. She moved to Wilmington with her family in 2003 and has been on staff with GAFA since 2005. Though she loves to teach, Melanie still enjoys the stage. Her many local performances include Dance-a-lorus, Wilmington Dance Festival, Lumina Festival, Forward Motion Dance, The Story Collective and Project Dance NYC. Ultimately, sharing her love for the Lord through artistic expression is the greatest reward of her career. When not in dance or Pilates studios, Melanie can be found spending time with her family, foraging in nature and adventuring with the most supportive husband in the world.
